Nigeria’s major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it remains unfazed by the recent exit of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, describing it as a “familiar and recurring development.”
The party’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, told newsmen on Friday in Bauchi, “This is not the first time; we’re expecting him back.”
According to Damagum, the PDP is neither shocked nor overly concerned by Atiku’s resignation, adding that the party has grown accustomed to his repeated exits and returns over the years.
The acting national chairman suggested that the former vice-president’s latest action conforms with a historical pattern, implying the PDP views his latest resignation as part of his political strategy rather than a final departure.
Damagum also assured that the party’s calm disposition is informed by its confidence in its own resilience and a degree of skepticism regarding the permanence of Atiku’s decision.
It would be recalled that Atiku Abubakar, who is widely believed to be nursing presidential ambition, is currently part of a coalition of opposition politicians working to form a new political party, the Alliance for Democratic Congress (ADC), in preparation for 2027 General Elections.
