Ahead of the October 12, 2025 presidential election, Cameroon’s ageing President, Paul Biya has hinted of his intention to seek re-election for a record eighth term of office.
At his present age of 92 years, Paul Biya is the oldest Head of State in the world and has been president of Camerron since 1982.
Despite orchestrated voter apathy, Biya had contested and won presidential election in 2018 for a term of seven years; the election was widely adjudged by local and foreign observers as being riddled with irregularities and refusal to participate by many citizens.
His perpetual presidency was made possible by a 2008 controversial amendment to Cameroon’s Constitution which removed limits to the presidential term that a person could serve.
According to the BBC, Biya declared his plan in a post on his X (Twitter) account on Monday.
“I am a candidate for the 12 October 2025 presidential election. Rest assured that my determination to serve you matches the serious challenges facing us. Together, there are no challenges that we cannot meet.
“The best is yet to come.”
It would be recalled that two of Biya’s long-term staunch supporters, Issa Tchiroma Bakary and Bello Bouba Maigari, had distanced themselves from the ageing dictator in June.
The two politicians have also declared to the public their preparedness to vie for the position of the nation’s president.
