The Nigerian Army has said that a full-scale investigation is currently ongoing to unravel facts about alleged withdrawal of troops from the Maga community in Kebbi State shortly before the abduction of 25 schoolgirls on November 17.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the military leadership is treating the development “with utmost seriousness” and has vowed firm action against any personnel found culpable.
The abduction took place at the Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga in the Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The investigation follows an official demand for explanations from military authorities by Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, regarding the reported withdrawal of security personnel from the school’s vicinity.
According to the source, the probe seeks to determine who authorized the troop withdrawal and whether all required operational procedures were strictly followed.
“The investigation is thorough and transparent. If any officer or soldier is found culpable in the unauthorised withdrawal or any act of negligence, appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be taken,” the source stated, emphasizing that sanctions would be applied regardless of rank.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reportedly reiterated the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to professionalism and the protection of all communities nationwide.
The Army has urged the public to remain calm while the investigation proceeds, promising that its findings will be made public in line with its commitment to accountability and public trust.
Meanwhile, a source added that troops are actively collaborating with other security agencies and the Kebbi State Government to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students and to bolster security measures in vulnerable communities across the state.
