Ahead of the bye election to fill the vacate seat for Dekina Okura State Constituency in Kogi State, the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has warned against spreading fake news that would hamper the success of the exercise.
The newly deployed INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kogi State Oliver Agundu gave the warning in Lokoja during an interactive session with party leaders in the State.
Agundu argued that spreading fake news will further fuel the already fragile situation in the Country, adding that, the Commission remains committed in conducting a transparent, free, fair, credible and acceptable election in the State.
He urged political parties to disseminate correct information and shun all forms of lies and fake news that will hamper the success of the exercise.
“We are appealing to all Political parties to very any information before spreading it. Fake news has been detrimental to the success of any election.
The Commission is setting up a mechanism to track fake news or any information that is not emanating from us.
” It is important for all and sundry to contact us when they are not sure of information they are getting out there. They should avoid rumors if we must get it right in our electoral process”.
According to him, only those with the permanent voters card will be allowed to vote in the 16th August bye election in Kogi State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner stated that, shortly after the bye election, the commission will commence the enrolment for prospective voters ahead of the 2027 general election.
