The Nigerian military on Friday inaugurated a General Court-Martial to try officers accused in an alleged coup plot, marking the formal commencement of proceedings. The accused officers were brought to the venue of the sitting, the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess, Asokoro, at about 8:53 a.m. on Friday under tight security. The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ordered the remand of alleged coup plotters in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, in a ruling, also ordered accelerated hearing in the case. Justice Abdulmalik equally ordered the DSS to give the lawyers and family members access to the defendants within a reasonable time. The judge then adjourned the matter until April 27 for commencement of trial and for hearing of the bail applications of the defendants. The Government of Cross River State, through its Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, said on Tuesday that it has recorded an occurrence of COVID-19 in the state. According to him, the first reported case of the outbreak involved a Chinese national, who worked with Lafarge and flew into the country on March 17, before taking ill.
